Hondata FlashPro

Introduction

The FlashPro is a programmable ECU interface which allows full user tuning and data-logging of the Honda Civic Type R FN2, FD2 and S2000 2006 onwards models.   It includes windows based software called FlashPro Manager.

The FlashPro connects from your laptop's USB port to your vehicles diagnostic port to provide 90 second programming with a variety of calibrations with extensive real time and stored datalogging capabilities.

Important: Make sure before you order Flashpro that it will work with your ECU. We recommend that your check your ECU is compatible by checking your ECU part number.  

The ECU part number is located on the ECU, which is located in the engine bay next to the battery on the FN2 and FD2 models. You will need to remove a plastic cover in order to see the sticker containing the part number.  The S2000 ECUs are in the passenger footwell.

Please note a FlashPro system purchased in the USA will not work in a car which originated in Europe/Japan/Australasia and vice versa.  Flash Pro systems are specific to region.  If your car is European, Japanese, Australian etc do not purchase a Flash Pro from the USA – it will not work!!!

Race Calibration

Hondata has developed a Race calibration which allows you to tune with the MAP sensor and bypass the limitations of the AFM sensor.  

Datalogging and Air fuel ratios

The Flashpro has extensive datalogging and many ways in which to examine your engine data.  

The tuning process is similar to the K-Pro.  

Will the FlashPro be available for other Hondas and Acuras?

Hondata have currently only developed a system for the Civic Type R FN2, FD2 and S2000 models 2006 onwards.  There is a possibility that a system will be developed for other 2007 onwards models but there are no immediate plans.  Please do not contact us regarding Flashpro for other vehicles, it will be released officially if and when it is available for other vehicles, we cannot respond to requests for information ahead of release dates.

I already have a reflash. Is there a discount?

Yes a discount is offered to existing Hondata FN2/FD2 reflash owners. The procedure is that you purchase your Hondata Flashpro from CPL Racing at normal price of £539 including VAT (£458.72 excluding VAT for customers outside the EEC).  Immediately we receive payment we will despatch the Flashpro, when you receive you receive it you will need to go onto Hondata's website to register it.  As part of the registration process, existing owners of the Hondata Group N ECU can also claim a rebate of $150 at the same time.  The rebate is send direct from Hondata to the customer and your should allow up to 2 to 3 weeks to receive the rebate.

If you choose not to claim the $150 rebate the FlashPro will still work perfectly on your car’s original ECU. 

How does it compare to KPro/K100?

KPro and K100 are completely different products.  They were created for the EP3/DC5 model of ECU.   These systems will only work on that type of ECU with the exact same Oki processor. Honda has changed the architecture of the ECU, including processor and encapsulation, so that there is no way the KPro or K100 can be made to work on any other ECU.

K-Pro and K100 require the ECU be sent to a CPL Racing for the installation of the K-Pro or K100 daughterboard.  By comparison, new FlashPro owners do not need to remove the ECU from their car.

Because FlashPro is a different product from KPro and K100, it has different features.  Not all features implemented in the KPro are possible with FlashPro.

The Flash Pro will not have boost or nitrous control.  However if you have an external boost controller the Race calibration will deliver the correct fuel and ignition for that boost level.

If you run nitrous, you will be able to run a calibration that is far safer and make more power than you would with a stock ECU.

Questions and Answers

- Are there base calibrations?

Yes there are some European/Japanese base calibrations in the software.  If you want a base calibration you must use these, CPL Racing do not provide alternate base calibrations, only fixed calibrations for the FN2/FD2 models (but please see below).


- Do I need dyno tuning?

For optimum performance CPL Racing recommend tuning.  We do, however, appreciate that many of our customers in Europe and beyond do not have access to a Hondata trained tuner and we will therefore be offering the FlashPro ready programmed with one of CPL Racing’s own calibrations as well as offering a full tuning service on our in-house dyno.  Contact us at guy@cplracing.co.uk for more details.   


- Can you give me more details on the Pre-programmed Flash-Pros you have available?

Various programs are available for different setups.  Use of any program is at the customers risk and the customer must decide suitability for their vehicle.  We have written various programs for different setups which make our programs more specific than the Group N reflash-type program, but we do not alter any of our programs for customer-specific requests and we are not able to offer analysis of customer datalogs with use of our programs.  This should not be necessary in any case as Hondata have been providing "reflash-type" programs in the same way that we are offering these for many years without issues.  If you decide to purchase a program from us the process will work in a simlar way, i.e. all programs are supplied "as is", and not tailor-made to customer specific requirements.  If you require a tailor-made specific program then your car must be tuned on a dyno either here at CPL Racing or by a suitablly qualified tuner in your own country.   All CPL Racing programs will be locked.  CPL will not provide base calibrations, if you need base calibrations you must use those provided in the FlashPro software.  An exception to this is if you are planning to come to CPL Racing for tuning and need a specific base calibration for this purpose, please contact us to discuss your requirements if this is the case.

If you purchase a Pre-Programmed system from us, you can still have your car tuned at a later date by us or by another tuner if you wish.  We recommend using only authorized Hondata dealers for tuning.

If you would like to purchase CPL program we need you to send us your ECU so that we can load the program.   We cannot email programs, we must have your ECU here for our tuner to load the program into it

- Will CPL’s supercharger now be available with a FlashPro system?

Yes, our supercharger kit now comes with a Flashpro. 

- Can I get rid of the AFM?
You can switch to a MAP based calibration (recommended for forced induction and/or cams). You need to still physically retain the AFM because it also contains the IAT sensor.

 - Will the Flashpro work on more than one vehicle?
The FlashPro is locked to one vehicle. It can be unlocked and transferred to another vehicle by returning the ECU to stock.

- Can I share the calibrations I make for my car?
Yes.

- Do I need the laptop in the vehicle to reflash the ECU?
No. The FlashPro can upload either with or without a laptop.

- Is there a VTEC window - FN2 & FD2?
Yes. This means that VTEC will operate based on rpm and engine load. For example, the supercharger reflashes have a VTEC window from 3500 rpm - 6000 rpm. At full throttle, VTEC operates at 3500 rpm. At light throttle, VTEC operates at 6000 rpm, and for load between full and light the VTEC will shift between 3500 rpm and 6000 rpm.

 Is there a VTEC window - S2000?
Yes. This means that VTEC will operate based on rpm and engine load. For example, the supplied reflashes have a VTEC window from 5600 rpm - 6400 rpm. At full throttle, VTEC engages at 5600 rpm. At light throttle, VTEC engages at 6400 rpm.  Between 5600rpm and 6400 rpm the S2000 will be on the low speed cam at partial throttle and switch to the high speed cam at wide open throttle throttle. This switch point is based on manifold pressure - so at higher altitudes the VTEC switch RPM will be higher.


- So does that mean 1 unit Hondata FlashPro can only work with one ecu or car only? Which mean I can't buy one FlashPro and use it together with a few of my friends Civics?
One ECU and vehicle at a time. You can unlock the FlashPro by returning the ECU to stock, and then transfer to another vehicle.

- Does it have control over drive-by-wire (DBW)?
Yes, but we don't change anything to do with DBW. The first reason is that there is no need to - the DBW control works fairly well as it is. The second reason is for legal liability.

- Any option of immobilizer control?
The immobilizer can not be disabled.  Hondata have implemented a number of features designed to protect the owner of the vehicle from theft, and one of these is not to allow the immobilizer to be disabled. This is going to be much less of an issue than previous products because the ECU does not need to be removed / swapped.

- 90 sec programming - does that mean it can't do real time tuning?
Correct. In any case, if you are tuning a vehicle, you need to wait longer than 90 seconds between dyno runs in order to maintain consistency between runs. If you think you could set the dyno up as constant rpm or load, and then tune each cell in each table, this type of tuning does not work because the engine temperature and therefore output changes fairly rapidly, prohibiting this type of tuning.

- If the ECU had been reflashed by another maker, can FlashPro still work?
Probably - we could tell you based off the ECU part and serial numbers plus the calibration ID. When you unlock the FlashPro it will only be reflashed back to a stock calibration.  PLEASE SEND ANY QUERIES ON THIS BY EMAIL ONLY.

-Will this support a 64-Bit Windows Vista?
Not at first.  Hondata need to make sure the USB driver is working 100% before handing over the money to Microsoft, because after that every change to the USB driver incurs a substantial cost to re-certify.

- Can it control nitrous?
No. However, you can at least control the ignition timing to make nitrous safer.

- Where can I order a Flashpro?
You can order from CPL Racing now.  We strongly recommend that Flashpro units are only purchased from authorized Hondata dealers in order to ensure that you get the best from your Flashpro unit.  If you are in doubt as to whether a company trying to sell you a Flashpro is authorized please email us and we can confirm this.    CPL Racing support their own retail and trade customers.  Customers that have purchased a Flashpro from an authorized Hondata dealer other than CPL Racing must seek technical support from that dealer direct, if further assistance is required CPL Racing will support the authorized dealer in order to resolve your query.  PLEASE NOTE - CPL Racing are not able to provide any technical support for Flashpro systems which are purchased outside the authorized Hondata dealer network.  BEWARE OF UNAUTHORISED SELLERS WHO MAY BE SELLING SYSTEMS WHICH WILL NOT WORK IN EUROPEAN/JAPANESE ORIGIN CARS AND DO NOT HAVE THE TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE TO PROVIDE SUPPORT, CPL RACING CANNOT OFFER ANY SUPPORT OR EXCHANGE ON UNOFFICIAL SALES.  Please also be aware of “internet only sales” dealers that offer no technical back up, void the warranty and could sell you the wrong type of FlashPro system.  “Internet only” and “Ebay” sellers are not official Hondata dealers.

- Do I need to send my ECU to CPL Racing or my authorized Hondata dealer?
No.  Your ECU does not need to be modified for FlashPro.   We only need to have your ECU if you also want CPL Racing to provide you with one of the CPL calibrations/programs.

 - Can you offer any discounts on the FlashPro?

Unfortunately we are not able to offer any discounts on Hondata products. 

- As a retail customer can I purchase more than one Flashpro?

Yes. 

- Is the Flash Pro easy to tune or do I need a company to tune it for me?

There are links to tutorials on Hondata’s website that give information on use of the Flashpro software.  Unfortunately it is not possible for CPL Racing to make judgements on whether any individuals can tune a car themselves as having never met you we don’t know your skills and experience.  If you are in any doubt whatsoever we recommend that you get an authorized Hondata dealer to tune your car for you.

- I also have an aftermarket race manifold and a Gruppe  M induction kit on my civic as well, would I see more gains by installing Flash Pro?

Yes.  A reflashed ECU is loaded with a generic “safe” programme suitable for all cars of a particular type and setup.  Specific tuning of your car on the dyno with a programmable system will enable the tuner to get the optimium from your engine and will always give better results. 

- How do base maps of the FlashPro compare with the Hondata ECU reflash for the FN2/FD2 , are there any differences ?   

The Group N reflash program is available with the Flash Pro.   

- As I live overseas and have no skilled Hondata tuner around , can you help/assist me remotely tune my Type-R ? (e.g. I have the Toda exhaust setup (manifold + catback) and Gruppe-M intake).  Can you help me with a custom map for this?

We cannot tune your car specifically from a remote location, as we need the car on the dyno, however we can provide one of our CPL programs.  There is an additional cost for this.

- In order to get the discount, do I need to send you the Hondata ECU?  

No, you just register the Flashpro when you receive it and claim your rebate direct from Hondata.

- Does the FlashPro come with any programs already and if so what are they?  Is there anything for exhaust or GruppeM?

You can download the software from Hondata’s website and view available calibrations which come with the FlashPro. 

- My FN2 is running a CPL manifold, GruppeM and the Hondata Group N ECU at the moment, I assume you will be loading this setup as one of the maps is that correct?

No this is not part of the FlashPro available calibrations, it is Hondata that are making the base calibrations available in the software, not CPL Racing.  However CPL Racing will be able to either tune your car or sell you one of our own calibrations/programs which are more specific.

- Is the immobiliser now working again with this upgrade? 

You can either use the FlashPro on your exising Group N ECU and purchase and receive a rebate of $150, in which case the immobilizer will be disabled; OR you can purchase a FlashPro at full price and use this with your car’s original ECU and the immobilizer will work as normal.

 - Is there any limit to the number of times you can upload a program into the ECU?

No, there is no limit

- If I already have the Hondata Group N ECU or Hondata Supercharger ECU with immobiliser disabled, can I send back my ECU to CPL Racing to have the immobiliser enabled at the same time as upgrading to the Flashpro?

Yes - but this can only be done as part of a Flashpro upgrade, and you would then need to take your car and ECU to a Honda dealer to have your keys recoded. 

- If I come to your workshop for tuning can you reduce/increase the Vtec point to XYZ? 

The VTEC point is not something which is "chosen".  It is established on the dyno based upon the modifications that are on the car.

- With regards to the programs that CPL are offering at £75 including VAT, can you adapt them and increase the rev limit to XYZ and the VTEC to what I want?

The CPL maps are generic maps for each setup type.  Rev limits and VTEC points will be set at the optimum level on our dyno, we will not be able to adapt maps or analyse datalogs on an individual basis.  If you require something more specific you must bring your car for tuning.
