Wet weather severely impacted the racing for the 1st round of the HKS Drag Series. Heavy rain on the Saturday saturated the supporting roadways and grassed areas surrounding the track, and even though the Santa Pod track crew cleared and dried the track itself, early on Sunday morning, some of the road cars using the drag strip throughout the morning had deposited mud which had fallen from underneath their cars and this was posing a headache for the track crew. Uncomfortable with the conditions and the poor state of the track Guy was not going to be able to set any records, so the objective was to win through the eliminations, achieve highest MPH and lowest elapsed time (ET) for maximum points. This proved to be a very wise decision as during qualifying two cars from the HKS Drag Series crashed into the wall, both likely to be irreparable. Luckily both drivers were unhurt. Two further nasty crashes in the eliminations made all competitors extremely cautious in the final stages of the racing. Despite the caution, Guy managed to take the win in the final against Richard Batty in a Mitsubishi FTO, thanks to quick reaction times and significantly more top-end power than his competitors.
A meeting of competitors and track officials was held last weekend and plans have been put in place to ensure that a repeat of the track conditions does not happen again. Not the start to the season that we had all been hoping for, with some quick cars in other classes being put out of the racing for the start of the season, and lack of excitement in the later rounds of eliminations due to all drivers having to be highly cautious due to the conditions. In the eliminations Guy took the win in the first round against fellow CPL team member Neil Knight, who had entered a reserve car due to his own car not being fully built in time for the first round of the series. In the second round of the eliminations Guy had a bye run. |
